O Box 279 Hackleburg, AL 35564 Municipalities - Rescue Squads - Funds - Volunteer Programs The Town of Hackleburg is authorized to make a donation to an organized volunteer rescue squad which serves the citizens of that town.Dear Mayor Cochran: This opinion is issued in response to your request for an opinion from the Attorney General. QUESTION Can the Town of Hackleburg make a donation to the rescue squad which serves the citizens of the town? FACTS, LAW AND ANALYSIS It is stated in your request that the rescue squad is not under the control of the town, and that it operates under the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads. Code of Alabama 1975, _ 9-3-18 provides: "(a) It is the intent of the legislature that this section provides assistance to organized volunteer fire departments and organized rescue squads. The legislature deems these organizations public in nature, as they protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. "(b) The state, any county, any municipality, any fire, water, sewer, garbage or school district, or any other public governmental entity or political subdivision is hereby authorized to donate money, property...
