Mr. Russell M. Carlos
No. 19800103
Mississippi Attorney General Opinions
January 3, 1980
Mr. Russell M. Carlos          Executive Director          Board of Trustees of State Eleemosynary Institutions          Woolfolk State Office Building          Jackson, Mississippi 39201          Opinion           Dear Mr. Carlos:          Attorney General Summer has received your letter of request on behalf of the Board of Trustees of State Eleemosynary Institutions for the Matty Hersee School of Nursing and has assigned it to the undersigned for research and reply.          The Matty Hersee Hospital School of Nursing is requesting an opinion as to whether or not the school may grant educational leave with pay to certain faculty members and the letter from the Director of Nursing Education reads in part:
“After diligently searching for credentially qualified faculty members, I find the demand to be much greater than the supply. It is very difficult to find a sufficient number of persons who have the necessary credentials and experience mandated by the Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning. “It is respectfully requested that I be allowed to grant educational leave with pay to faculty members in order for them to obtain their Master's Degree. This will, in turn, help insure us of the necessary faculty in order for us to stay accredited by the Institutions of Higher Learning and to keep our doors open for prospective nursing students which will help supply the demand for registered nurses in Mississippi. Without this means of support our future for necessary faculty members looks very grave.”
