The township board of each township shall have the authority and it shall be its duty to cause all cemeteries within its township, except private cemeteries and cemeteries owned by cities and villages located in such townships, to be properly taken care of. The legislative body of any city or village may contribute to the maintenance and care of cemeteries owned by the township, and the township board may contribute to the maintenance and care of cemeteries owned by a city or village. Such contributions shall be paid from the respective contingent or general funds. The township boards of 2 or more adjoining townships, whether or not the townships are located in the same county may contribute to the maintenance and care of cemeteries owned by 1 or more of the townships.
