Strahan          George County Justice Court          356 A Cox Street          Lucedale, Mississippi 39452          Re: Credit Against Fines           Dear Ms. Strahan:          Attorney General Mike Moore has received your letter of request and has assigned it to me for research and reply. Your letter states:
         When a defendant owes the court money and a Justice Court Judge issues a mittimus to remain in jail, should they be allowed $10 or $25 a day while in jail? Should this credit be applied to fines only or could it be applied to both fines and assessments?
         In response, please find attached MS AG Op., Thornton (May 29, 1998) which states that a defendant who is jailed for not paying criminal fines is entitled to receive a credit against such fine of ten dollars ($10.00) per day under Mississippi Code Annotated Section 47-1-47 for each day that he...
