Walker          Executive Secretary          Public Employees' Retirement System          1705 Sillers State Office Building          Jackson, Mississippi                    Dear Mr. Walker:          This is in reply to yours of November 22, 1972, wherein you enclose correspondence advocating the position that a retired officer of the Public Health Service is a retired member of the Armed Forces of the United States within the meaning and the application of that term as used in the Public Employees' Retirement statutes of this State, and wherein you ask whether such position is sound.          The Armed Forces of the United States consist of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. These services are under the direct civilian authority of the Secretary of Defense. The United States Public Health Service is under the direct civilian authority of the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.          Public Health officers may be assigned to the various components of the military service.
